Daily Reflection for Friday, November 15, 2019

Peace and Blessings, Friends and Parishioners!

We encourage you to reflect on Friday’s readings at this link:

If you prefer to use your own Bible, the readings are:
First Reading:  Wisdom 13: 1-9
Responsorial:  Psalm 19: 2-3, 4-5AB
Gospel:  Luke 17: 26-37

Our reflection on Friday’s readings:
"Let them realize from these things how much more powerful is the one who made them."     Wisdom 13:4b

What a wonderful world!

"I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world."

Skies of blue and clouds of white. The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night. What a wonderful song of joy recorded by the late, great Louis Armstrong.

By some estimates, there are 300 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy. One of those stars is our sun which warms our home, the planet Earth. Astronomers and physicists estimate there are 100 billion galaxies in the continually expanding observable universe. And now astrophysicists theorize there may be other universes parallel to our own. Wow. What a wonderful world.

Hard to get my head around billions of stars and galaxies and maybe even parallel universes. But this I understand:

"I hear babies cry, and I watch them grow
They'll learn much more that I'll ever know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.
Yes, I think to myself what a wonderful world."

In today's scripture reading from the book of Wisdom we are told of the beauty and the joy we experience from the wonder of the world around us. Stars. Fire. Wind. We are "struck by their might and energy"  (Wisdom 13:4).

We are reminded that we are foolish if, while in awe of the beauty of the world around us, we don't also "discern the artisan" who created all of this and we are told 'how far more exellent is the Lord than these; for the original source of beauty fashioned them" (Wisdom 13:3).

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the firmament proclaims the works of his hands.”  (Psalm 19: 2)

What a wonderful world.

Peace and blessings,
Al Mytty
