Daily Reflection for Thursday, May 05 2022

Peace and Blessings, Friends and Parishioners,

We encourage you to reflect on Thursday's readings at this link:
https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/050522.cfm

If you prefer to use your own Bible, the readings are:
First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 8:26-40
Responsorial: Psalm 66:8-9, 16-17, 20
Gospel: John 6:44-51

Our reflection on Thursday’s readings:
I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever (John 6:51)

Today’s Gospel reading invites me to pause in wonderment.  I think of all those who have held on to the message of the Gospel today.  I imagine a room filled with people, each with a story to tell about his or her belief that Jesus is the bread of life and how this belief shepherded each one through life’s challenges and suffering.

I wonder what I would hear if each person had a chance to tell their story.  I have certainly my own story of journeying with my mother who had Alzheimer’s.  Without my faith in the bread of life, I would not have had the strength to care for her.  Without my faith in the bread of life, I would not have made it through major surgeries unafraid of the outcomes.  Without my faith in the bread of life, I would not have been able to let go of rejection.

Oh, how I want to hear the stories of how the bread of life has transformed others.  Not because I want to hear their personal struggles and sufferings but to hear how God has nourished them with strength along the way, even if the story doesn’t seem to have a happy ending.

I am the bread of life, Jesus says to us today.  It is this bread of life that nourishes us through our human stories.  It is this bread of life that holds us together when nothing else can.  It is this bread of life that is freely given without judgement and with deep love.  The bread of life is blessed, broken, and given.  It is ours now to receive.

May the Bread of Life nourish you with God’s love today,

Margarita Solis Deal
