Our reflection on Friday’s readings:
A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me.  Psalm 51:12

I have been feeling disconnected and unmoored lately. Perhaps you feel the same.  I’m sure the more than two years of pandemic and the associated impacts to everyday life as well as significant losses experienced have contributed to this feeling.  I’ve abandoned the anticipation of “getting back to normal” and have started to embrace that life, in many ways, will never be the same.  Compounding for me has been the seeming increase in violence, chaos and discord in our community, the nation, the world. I have a sense that everything is out of control, and I think that contributes to my feeling of being ungrounded.  I spend probably too much time worrying and contemplating big questions for which there are no concrete answers.

When I read today’s psalm, I thought, “Yes! That’s exactly what I need!”

A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me.

A clean heart that is not clouded by suspicion, judgment, anger, or malice.  A heart that feels the pain and suffering of the world, but also rejoices in the mystery and beauty of life and creation. A heart that sees and loves the child of God that is each and every person I encounter.

A renewed, steadfast spirit that clings tightly to hope and does not despair. A spirit that sees beyond human frailty and weakness and finds opportunity, possibility, and potential. A spirit that is resilient and energized to keep me moving forward on the journey.

That is asking a lot, I know. But the Lord said, “Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find.” [Matthew 7:7] So, I must take Him at His Word.

A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me.

This will be my prayer as I start each day this week.

Peace and love,
Andra Liepa
