Daily Reflection for Thursday, July 14, 2022

Peace and Blessings, Friends and Parishioners,

We encourage you to reflect on Thursday’s readings at this link:
Memorial of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Virgin | USCCB

If you prefer to use your own Bible, the readings are:
First Reading:  Isaiah 26:7-9, 12, 16-19
Responsorial: Psalm 102:13-21
Gospel: Matthew 11:28-30

Our reflection on Thursday’s readings:
For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.     Matthew 11:30

I was in various airports recently and was reflecting on this Gospel as I watched some (but it felt like all) of God's human creation maneuver the harried rhythm of the airports.  It took me to literally witness people of all shapes/sizes lugging about their baggage for me to appreciate a different angle to the Gospel for today.  Some walked slowly, seemingly as unaffected by their bags as by the bustle around them.  Others struggled much more to wrangle the luggage they carried as well as to juggle the stress multipliers of time constraints, delays, and logistical obstacles getting to their desired destination.

Like me, I hope you'll find the Gospel for today very soothing.   It's hard not to feel an almost palpable consolation and sense of refreshment when the God of all compassion SEES all of us who suffer in our unique ways under the baggage we lug through our lives.

Not only does he welcome those oppressed and downtrodden by our baggage burdens; He also appeals to us.   He invites us to live in the faith example He set.  He supplicates us to don the yoke of obedience (which paradoxically serves to free us from sin and suffering.) The consolation stems from His having already paid the ultimate price for our sinfulness and the comfort in knowing we need not bear our yoke alone because He so willingly bears it with us.

What yoke are you carrying that you've not allowed Jesus to carry with you?
