Daily Reflection for Thursday, December 16  2021

Peace and Blessings, Friends and Parishioners,

We encourage you to reflect on Thursday's readings at this link: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/121621.cfm

If you prefer to use your own Bible, the readings are:
First Reading: Isaiah 54:1-10
Responsorial: Psalm 30:2 and 4, 5-6, 11-12 and 13
Gospel: Luke 7:24-30

Our reflection on Thursday’s readings:
What did you go out to the desert to see--a reed swayed by the wind?   (Luke 7: 24)

The word was spreading that John the Baptist was preaching in the desert and people were coming to hear what he had to say. This Gospel passage places us in a time where John the Baptist was no longer preaching because the authorities imprisoned him.

Jesus addressed the crowd looking for John and asked them a very direct question. “What did you go out to the desert to see--a reed swayed by the wind?”

While Jesus was referring to John the Baptist, I have a sense He was preparing the crowd for hearing and seeing that the incarnational presence of God was in their midst – the Good News.  What did I go out to the desert to see? Did I want to see someone who could be persuaded to see the world as I see the world, or perhaps someone who would fit the image I hold to be holy and true? Did I want to see someone who would side with me and hold my views and perspectives?

The question begs me to answer, do I see Jesus in the image that fulfills my expectations and desires? Do I see Jesus in the image that I control and contour, or do I see Jesus for who He truly is--Word made Flesh and a God in whom there is no violence?

I leave today’s readings not with great wisdom or insights. I end this reflection with the question, “What did you go out to the desert to see--a reed swayed by the wind?” in repeat mode in my head.

May I see Jesus as He truly is and not as I am,
