Our reflection on Wednesday's reading:
. . . are you the one who is to come or are we to look for another? Luke 7:19
It was a world groaning in despair from the tyranny of governments, from poverty and from sickness. Yet a hope remained, even as wise men searched the skies for a sign. The world today is not much different. The follies of men, the pain of hunger, and the fear of illness continue to cloud the hopes of so many.
John the Baptist sent his disciples to ask Jesus, "Are you the one?” Then as now, the faithful sought the fulfillment of their deepest hopes and longings where, “Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss.” Psalm: 85:11.
So is this babe of Bethlehem the one? This is a question for each of us to answer for ourselves. In this time of pandemic, political unrest, fear and anger, is this babe of Bethlehem the one we will follow in faith and hope as the magi followed the star through the darkness of their world?
In answer to John's disciples, Jesus points them to what they can see with their own eyes. Jesus lifts up his love and attention toward those in dire need, neglected by much of society but held precious by the Christ. Good and healing acts are Jesus’ assurance that he is indeed the one for whom John the Baptist has been preparing the way.
As we believe he is the one, then we are called to be a people of healing (wearing our masks), people concerned with justice (for all), and called to be people of reconciliation in a much divided world.
Prayer: Lord, may your light shine in our darkened world and by the power of your Holy Spirit and by our love may we give witness to whom we truly believe you are, Jesus the Christ. Amen.

¿ … eres tú el que ha de venir venir o tenemos que esperar a otro? Lucas 7:19
Era un mundo que gimía desesperado por la tiranía de los gobiernos, de la pobreza y de la enfermedad. Sin embargo, se mantuvo una esperanza, incluso cuando los sabios buscaron una señal en los cielos. El mundo de hoy no es muy diferente. Las locuras de los hombres, el dolor del hambre y el miedo a la enfermedad siguen nublando las esperanzas de tantos.
Juan el Bautista envió a sus discípulos para preguntarle a Jesús: "¿Eres tú el que ha de venir?" Entonces, como ahora, los fieles buscaron el cumplimiento de sus más profundas esperanzas y anhelos donde, "La bondad y la verdad se encontrarán; justicia y paz se besará. Salmos: 85:11
Entonces, ¿es este bebé de Belén el elegido? Esta es una pregunta para cada uno de nosotros para responder por nosotros mismos. En este tiempo de pandemia, malestar político, miedo y enojo, ¿es este bebé de Belén el que seguiremos con fe y esperanza mientras los magos siguieron a la estrella a través de las tinieblas de sus mundo?
En respuesta a los discípulos de Juan, Jesús los señala a lo que pueden ver con sus propios ojos. Jesús eleva su amor y atención hacia los necesitados, descuidados por gran parte de la sociedad, pero que el Cristo tiene preciosos. Los actos buenos y sanos son la seguridad de Jesús de que él es en verdad para quien Juan el Bautista ha estado preparando el camino.
Como creemos que él es el único, entonces estamos llamados a ser un pueblo de sanación (que lleva nuestras máscaras), personas preocupadas por la justicia (para todos), y llamados a ser personas de reconciliación en un mundo muy dividido.
Oración: Señor, que tu luz brille en nuestro mundo oscurecido y por el poder de tu Espíritu Santo y por nuestro amor demos testimonio de quiénes creemos verdaderamente que eres, Jesucristo. Amén.
