Our reflection on Monday’s readings:
When Balaam raised his eyes and saw Israel encamped, tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came upon him Numbers 24: 2
The opening line of the first reading today transported me back many years ago to St. Patrick’s Church in Urbana, Illinois, home the University of Illinois. I was on staff at our vibrant and diverse parish, overseeing many ministry programs. I knew most of the active parishioners. Some were brilliant academics with a worldwide experience of God; others were rooted in simple yet profound faith. All had a passion for their ministry and a call to serve the Lord.
Like Balaam who was filled with God’s Spirit when he saw the tribes of Israel encamped, I too was filled with God’s Spirit when at St. Patrick’s Mass I looked around the church to see the various groups of families and friends sitting together. We came from many walks of life and had different spiritual experiences. Some were progressive, some were traditional. All felt strongly about their personal call and ministry. How did we work together? How did we respect and honor one another’s faith journey? The responsorial psalm gives one answer.
“Teach me your ways, O Lord.” This is not a prayer to be taken lightly. It takes courage and faith to ask this of God because once we know His way, we cannot follow Him and do otherwise. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life” John 14:6. Jesus told us and demonstrated the ways of the Lord.
Lastly, we see in the Gospel how easy it is to get caught up in the ways of the world. The scribes asked Jesus who gave Him the authority to preach His message. They quickly realized that knowing the truth, knowing that Jesus came from God, would change their lives. It was easier to ignore the truth and continue to preach and lead as they had before than to follow Jesus.
We are at that same crossroad every day: follow Jesus or follow the group that keeps us comfortable in our way of thinking and acting?

La primera línea de la primera lectura de hoy me transportó hace muchos años a la Iglesia de San Patricio en Urbana, Illinois, hogar de la Universidad de Illinois. Yo estaba en el personal de nuestra vibrante y diversa parroquia, supervisando muchos programas del ministerio. Conocía a la mayoría de los feligreses activos. Algunos fueron académicos brillantes con una experiencia mundial de Dios; otros estaban arraigados en una fe simple pero profunda. Todos tenían pasión por su ministerio y un llamado a servir al Señor.
Al igual que Balaam, que estaba lleno del Espíritu de Dios cuando vio a las tribus de Israel acampadas, yo también me llené del Espíritu de Dios cuando en la misa de San Patricio miré alrededor de la iglesia para ver a los diversos grupos de familias y amigos sentados juntos. Vinimos de muchos ámbitos de la vida y tuvimos diferentes experiencias espirituales. Algunos eran progresistas, otros tradicionales. Todos se sentían firmemente acerca de su llamamiento personal y ministerio. ¿Cómo trabajamos juntos? ¿Cómo respetamos y honramos el camino de fe de los demás? El salmo responsorial da una respuesta.
"Enséñame tus caminos, oh Señor." Esta no es una oración que se debe tomar a la ligera. Se necesita valor y fe para pedir esto a Dios porque una vez que conocemos Su camino, no podemos seguirlo y hacer lo contrario. Jesús dijo: "Yo soy el camino, la verdad, y la vida" Juan 14:6. Jesús nos dijo y demostró los caminos del Señor.
Por último, vemos en el Evangelio lo fácil que es quedar atrapado en los caminos del mundo. Los escribas le pidieron a Jesús que le dio la autoridad para predicar Su mensaje. Rápidamente se dieron cuenta de que conocer la verdad, sabiendo que Jesús provenía de Dios, cambiaría sus vidas. Era más fácil ignorar la verdad y seguir predicando y guiando como lo habían hecho antes que seguir a Jesús.
Estamos en esa misma encrucijada todos los días: ¿seguir a Jesús o seguir al grupo que nos mantiene cómodos en nuestra forma de pensar y actuar?
